Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Hypnotherapy
IBS is the most common Gastroenterological condition affecting about 1 in 10 people at some point during their lives. Hypnotherapy is recommended as an effective treatment in the NICE Guidelines (2008) and by the British Gastroenterological Society (2000) if you have been suffering from symptoms for more than 12 months.
What is IBS?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a condition of the digestive system whose symptoms include stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. Other conditions can have similar symptoms so it is important to see your GP to rule out these problems before seeking help from a Hypnotherapist. IBS is not the kind of condition people talk about much. It is awkward and embarrassing. Not only that it is painful and distressing. It can have a profound effect on your life. It can influence everything from the food you can eat, the places you go to the clothes that you wear. Women are more likely to suffer from IBS than men.
What Causes IBS?
The exact cause of IBS is unclear, some research suggests it may be due to over activity of the gut. For example contractions of the muscles of the gut wall become overactive or abnormal. There may also be an increased sensitivity to the gas in the bowel.
The link between stress and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
You may have noticed a link between the severity of your symptoms and the amount of stress you are experiencing. You may experience a flare of your IBS at the most difficult times in your life. In fact this is not all bad news it means that you can do something to help this condition, yourself. You may not always be able to change the source of stress in your life, but you can change the way that you respond. This will change the way that your gut responds.
Hypnotherapy is an effective treatment for IBS
Hypnotherapy has been proven to help relieve IBS symptoms. Hypnotherapy can help you to learn new relaxation techniques, as well as learning new ways to manage stress.
